The advantages to being small
As a small business, and especially when starting out, and losing the support that being part of a large corporate environment provides, it’s so easy to feel overwhelmed.
However there are incredible advantages to being small.
You have complete autonomy over your decision making and can decide where you invest your time and money. You do not have to justify your spend to someone very divorced from the network you support. You can do things you enjoy and get paid!
You decide ultimately which pieces of work and which clients you support because ultimately successful delivery is the best marketing you will ever have.
You can deviate, you can be agile and you can work in a bespoke fashion for your clients and focus on providing them with the support they need rather than the inflexible and rigid packages of work, that you would normally be forced to sell in a corporate environment.
So for any small business starting out from someone 6 years on in their journey and still learning. Take it one step at a time, and relish the positives and any disadvantages will be sure to fade into insignificance.
The first year is the hardest. There is a reason why many small businesses don’t make it beyond two years. You can’t be prepared for every situation but you can take the learnings and become stronger.
One things for sure, you will learn way more than you anticipate.
And do not forget where you came from and to thank those that have supported you along the way. Never ever lose your humility.
